Bathrooms and Basements

Here is a picture of our recently remodeled upstairs bathroom. Thanks to Caroline for getting it started. It only took six months to complete. Not really, but when I mae the outlet into a four plug, from a two plug, I cut the wall the wrong direction, and had to patch it. It was a few months before we repainted that spot.
Her is a view of the tub, toilet and shower.

With the bathroom finished, we are inspired to finish the basement. A new push is on to get it done. Below are some pictures of the current state.
This is how the unfinished part of the basement looks now. This is from the south, looking north, along the east half.

This shows the area that will be the kitchen.
This shows the eastwall of the basement.
This is the view from the north side of the basement looking south.

We started to remodel the bathroom on the main floor. When Kanien, and then Katherine tried to rmove the wallpaper from the back wall, it would not come off. The paper backing of the sheetrock was pulling off. There was a lot of mold and mildew in the sheetrock. Katherine and I decided we should remove the sheetrock and replace it with the green water-resistant type. When we began pulling the sheetrock off, this is what we saw:
When we began tearing down the sheetrock, we saw what initially looked like "blown in" insulation. Well it was blown in, but it was dryer lint. When the house was being built, they had put a four inch dryer duct into a three and a half inch wall. When they crushed the duct to get it to fit, it popped open at the bottom seam, and lint and, moisture had been blowing into the wall for almost twenty years. The wooden studs, and the wooden subfloor were all rotted and soft.
This photo shows how tightly the dryer lint was packed into the wall.
Notice the crushed dryer vent that had popped open.

We finally decided to tear down the entire wall and start over. Here we are removing the sheetrock from the wall between the washer and dryer, and the bathroom. We'll try to take some pictures and keep you posted on our progress.

Wow, that looks like a lot of work. It's amazing how one wrong little step can cause a huge disaster like that. Keep us posted. I like the almond bathroom, though!

It's even more amazing in real life...now you don't have to lock the door in the gray bathroom because it doesn't have a wall anyway.
