Timpanogos

Thursday August 10, 2006
Today we planned to hike Mount Timpanogos. We drove to the Timpanooke trailhead, where the sun was just coming up. Here we are putting on our hiking boots and gaiters, before heading up the trail nine miles to the top of Timpanogos. Get that sunscreen on!
Rick is showing Kristin our destination. The tip of Timpanogos is visible just above the trees.
These are a few of the many wildflowers that grew along the trail.
As the hike was warm and strenuous, we enjoyed the stops by these cool streams that crossed the trail.
This moose was just off of the trail, munching on some succulent willow trees. He seemed unperturbed by our presence.
After hiking through the forest, and winding up the steep mountain side, the trail reaches this open area.
We often hiked through these large fields of wildflowers.
Looking back down the montain, about a third of the way up.
Below, is a long portion of the trail that climbs along the side of the mountiain. When we reached the top where the trail divides to Emerald Lake or one can hike another three miles to the Summitt, Kristin was in favor of just going up to Emerald Lake then back down. I offered her $5.00 to climb with us to the summit, and she countered with $5.00 and dinner at the Spaghetti Factory. I agreed, and after lunch, we pressed on.
These wildflowers were blooming just below the ridge we climbed before reaching the top.

Finally, we made it to the top. This is looking north. None of the people we met on the trail were planning on sliding the galcier, but we were!

TheGlacier is a lot steeper than it looks in this wide angle shot.
Katherine and Kristin enjoy their bumpy ride down the glacier.

At Emerald Lake there was a herd of fifty mountain goats. We filled our water bottles, and camelbacks, then began the long hard hike back down. We were pretty tired when we reached the car at eight p.m., but not too tired to keep our promise to Kristin. We finished the evening at the Spaghetti Factory.

Oh beautiful Mt. Timpanogos. I hope you're still feeling up to a lot of hikes in three years, because I'm going to have a lot to make up for.

Kristin drives a hard bargain, but I'm glad she made it to the top and didn't go down the wrong side of the mountain, ha, ha.

You're such a nice dad! Taking Kristin on a beautiful hike and taking her out to dinner. I have so many memories of hiking Timpanogos. There is nothing here to even compare to that mountain! Thanks for the beautiful pictures.
